Gooseberry tree (Phyllanthus acidus, Phyllantaceae)

Gooseberry tree

Thought to have originated in Madagascar and distributed to South East Asia and other tropical countries, this little tree has also become quite popular in Colombia and Ecuador, where the tart fruits are often sold as street food and eaten with salt. The photograph was taken in a cacao plantation in coastal northern Ecuador.
